Character Information
Name: Sam Winchester
Canon Origin/Series: Supernatural
School Year: First
Gender: Male
Age: 11
Out of school living location: No permanent location.
Blood status: Half-blood.
Personality: One of the most noticeable things about Sam Winchester is just how different he is from the rest of the Winchester family. It’s especially highlighted in the first season, with him constantly admonishing the way John raised him and Dean. He says they were raised to be warriors, and it’s obvious he’s always craved to be normal. He can be bitter and angry over his upbringing, and he despises the fact that he was dragged into his father’s personal vendetta by virtue of being dragged around the country by him. He is quick to point out he never knew his mother, and he has no attached feelings or desire to get caught up in his father’s crusade. (This, of course, changes when his girlfriend Jess is murdered by the same demon that killed his mother, and Sam’s newfound determination to hunt monsters proves that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree after all.)
Despite how Sam reacts and thinks about his family life, he fits into the Winchester hunting duo perfectly. He fulfills a role, and he is good at his job. He is efficient but thorough, obsessing over his actions and making sure that what he does is both effective and possible. He is remarkably intelligent, scoring remarkably high on the LSATS, as well as observant. He notices the minute details that can change the course of a hunt, and nothing really escapes him. He is logical for the most part, but when emotional he can make some extremely rash decisions. He tends to let his relationships and feelings cloud his judgments, but he is more than capable of doing what needs to be done.
Sam wants to save people, something he discovered when he rejoined Dean in the search for their father. He learns that there is more to what John Winchester did then look for vengeance. He is determined to help keep people safe from the monsters in this world, but where Dean sees things in black and white, Sam sees shades of grey. He can see that a monster is sometimes more than a monster, and he has doubts about whether killing everything they see is necessarily the best thing.
He is sympathetic and understanding of others and their thoughts and fears, and while he is not always 100% honest, he tries his best to comfort those who are afraid. He is quick and willing to give advice to others, even if he is resistant to accepting advice himself. He refrains from expressing his deepest thoughts, and he hates when people worry. He prefers to handle things on his own and can become defensive. He will, however, breakdown and confess his inner thoughts, because he values the truth. This more than likely stems from his upbringing, and how Sam is and always has been frustrated over the secrets the Winchester family kept. This desire for honesty can even come as him confessing to lies he told a family about what he and Sam really do, even if people are skeptical.
Overall, Sam is logical, intelligent, and kind. He has strong beliefs and values, but he is not afraid of reanalyzing why he believes what he does, and if what he believes is actually the truth. He both fears and welcomes change, and he will do anything it takes to make others safe and happy.
Canon Background: Here
Background (AU!Canon; HP): Sam Winchester was born to John and Mary Winchester, a loving couple who lived in Lawrence, Kansas and had one other son, Dean, but he would never have a normal life. When Sam was six months old, his mother was killed in a strange fire in his nursery.
Distraught, John was determined to find out the cause of Mary’s death. It wasn’t just a fire, and when he discovered it was a malicious attack by a magical being, he vowed that he was going to kill it just like it killed Mary. He knew it was going to be hard, raising two boys on his own while trying to get revenge, but he would manage.
Sam never knew a life but the one he had. As he got older, he began to desire a more normal home life. He was dragged around the country for a reason he didn’t really comprehend, and he couldn’t understand why he and his family never stayed in one place. For the longest time he didn’t even know what his father did, how they got money, or anything at all. He didn’t know about monsters, or magic, or why his mother wasn’t there, and he began to resent this life. When he was five, his family moved to England. He still didn’t know why, and he wouldn’t know until a letter arrived for Dean. It talked about a school for magic, and before he knew it Dean was gone.
He came back, though, months after he left, before leaving again. The cycle repeated and Sam didn’t understand it for a little while. He had still been kept in the dark for so long, but when a hunt John was on went just a little too wrong and Sam was almost killed, the youngest Winchester was sat down and told about what his father did, and why his life was so weird. He was told why, exactly, Dean was gone for so long, and this time he actually understood.
So when his own letter for Hogwarts came, Sam wasn’t surprised, and he was more than prepared for his first year. It was all a bit more overwhelming then he had imagined it would be, but he had read Dean’s old text books (which would become his text books as the years passed, he already knew that), and he knew a lot about magic already. So it wasn’t hard for him to excel at his classes. He was especially good at Potions and Transfigurations,
How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: Sam is brave to a fault, just like his brother and his father. He is fiercely protective, and he is also extremely chivalrous and respectful. He does what he needs to do to protect others, often times disregarding his own personal safety.
Hufflepuff: He is extremely loyal, to the point of stubbornly refusing to leave his family or friends behind. He wants to help those he cares about, even forcing him and his brother to drive miles and miles because he’s worried about a friend. He is kinder and gentler than Dean, and more understanding and sympathetic to others than his older brother is.
Ravenclaw: Sam is the smart one out of the two brothers. He is the primary source of research (excluding Bobby), and he is extremely intelligent and logical. He is quick on his feet, and he can figure out just about anything. He’s very good at thinking abstractly, and can figure out a solution for just about anything, even if the solution is unconventional. He is an outside of the box thinker, and he can be extremely rational when he needs to be. He is the brains of this hunting operation.
Slytherin: He’s not afraid to do anything he needs to. He can be rather manipulative of others, and oftentimes lies about things to get what he wants/needs. He is sly and crafty, but he feels like this is mostly necessary to help others or to keep him and his brother safe. He is not above being a bad person or doing bad things, and while he does a lot of things for the greater good, he does just as much to make himself feel better.
